My name is Alain Cogliastro. I am a botanist and researcher at the Jardin botanique de Montréal. A key aspect of my work is related to forest ecology in general and to silviculture (cultivating trees).
When we are asked about Quebec's forest, the first things we think about are the huge public forests, populated by conifers as far as the eye can see. My playground, in southern Quebec, is more diversified: private forests belonging to all sorts of people. They have suffered human occupation, were very disturbed, and as a result they have grown poorer. It is on those particular forests that I do my work.
At the Garden, I also manage the trees in the Arboretum. Not sure what an Arboretum is? Good! I introduce the subject in this video entitled Welcome to the Arboretum.
