The winner is the ginkgo, which grew alongside dinosaurs 150 million years ago. Although glaciation was fatal to the species in Europe and in the Americas, it survived in the mountains in eastern China. The metasequoia, which has been present on Earth for at least 50 million years, and the Wollemi pine, whose past goes back 90 million years or more, are also "living fossils".
