The next generation
The fruit, which contains the tree's seeds, has one sole function, i.e. to ensure the development of the next generation of trees. It may do this in various ways: by protecting the seeds while they mature, helping disperse the seeds over the widest possible area, or storing nutrients to encourage the seeds to germinate.
In keeping with this reproductive imperative, each tree species has its own strategy, its own fruit. This results in an almost infinite number of kinds of fruit, many of which are a delight for the eyes and the tastebuds. Speaking of fruit, how well do you really know yours?
